Why Web 2.0 Is a Powerhouse of Affiliate Profits

Web 2.0 is a phenomenon that’s sweeping the Internet like a wildfire.  A couple of years ago when people were wondering what would be “the next big thing” on the Internet, this is what they were talking about.

Basically, web 2.0 consists of sites that are created primarily by user-generated content.  These sites include social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon and Digg, and large free host-type sites like Twitter,  Squidoo, HubPages, and Blogger.  These sites all consist of content that’s mainly generated by the users of the site, and not provided by the site itself.

These types of sites are fantastic for generating affiliate sales.  They control massive amounts of traffic, and contain smaller sub-communities of people who are interested in specific niches.  If you can learn to harness the power of the mass traffic available at these types of sites, you can potentially pull in a lot of affiliate sales.

You can also start your own web 2.0 site and take advantage of the fact that your users can create tons of targeted content for you, and then you can put your affiliate ads on every one of those pages.  Niche communities can be great for driving traffic to targeted affiliate programs.

Using these sites to drive affiliate sales can be tricky.  Many of these sites don’t allow promotion of affiliate links on their site, and you could end up getting banned if you do things the wrong way.  Different sites have different rules, so it’s important to read the terms and conditions of each site carefully.

Even though marketing on many of these sites can be tricky, it can certainly be worth the learning curve involved.  Some of these sites have millions of users, and it’s hard to ignore that kind of volume.

Another reason why these sites make it so easy to drive affiliate sales is that they make it easy to find people who are into a certain niche.  People often put their favorite hobbies and passions in their profiles, so you can search for people who are into the niche you’re targeting and add them to your list of friends.  You can use this list of friends to start driving traffic to your own site, like a forum or blog.

Then you can market your affiliate offerings from your own site.  There are no rules that say you can’t tell a friend about your own site, unless you’re spamming a bunch of people you don’t know.
